Researchers tested the ability of the H7N9 virusto infect several mammal species including ferrets and monkeys. They found that as well as readily invading the lungs, it could be spread like seasonal flu by coughing and sneezing.Professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, and Tokyo University in Japan, who led the international team, said: "H7N9 viruses have several features typically associated with human influenza viruses and therefore possess pandemic potential and need to be monitored closely."

Most bird flu viruses do not infect humans. But H7N9 has so far infected at least 132 people, more than a fifth of whom have died. Several instances of human-to-human infection are suspected.

In monkeys the H7N9 virus efficiently infected cells in both the upper and lower respiratory tract, the scientists reported in the journal Nature. Most human flu viruses are restricted to the upper airway of non-human primates.

NEW YORK/LONDON – More signs of distress in China’s economy and rising bond yields led to a broad sell-off in stocks Monday, leaving key market indexes down more than 5 percent from their record highs last month.

It was the first 5 percent decline — referred to on Wall Street as a “pullback” — since November.

Pullbacks that occur during bull markets tend to be “nasty and brutish” — but short, said John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management. He said it’s common to get declines of 3 percent to 7 percent “as the market restores a reverence to risk to the investing public.”

U.S. trading started with a slump Monday. The market recovered much of its loss, then fell back again. By the close of trading the big stock indexes were clinging to modest gains for the second quarter, which ends Friday.

Before Wall Street opened for trading Monday, Asian markets were already sharply lower, led by a 5 percent plunge in China’s Shanghai Composite Index. That was the index’s biggest loss in four years. The decline was prompted by a government crackdown on off-balance sheet lending, which made investors worry about China’s economic growth. The selling spread to Europe, where France’s benchmark stock index fell 1.7 percent, Germany’s 1.2 percent and Britain’s FTSE 1.4 percent.

U.S. traders took one look at that and started dumping stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average fell as much as 248 points in the first hour of trading. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note spiked to its highest in almost two years as the sell-off brought down prices of U.S. government debt. Gold and other metals also fell.

Myanmar on Tuesday pardoned dozens of political prisoners a day after the European Union agreed to end almost all sanctions against the former pariah state, activists said.

Bo Kyi of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) said, at least 59 political prisoners were included in the latest amnesty.

“More than 200 political prisoners are still in prison,” he continued. “Political prisoners should be recognized as political prisoners and be released unconditionally.”

He said, the amnesty included 40 former rebels from eastern Shan state jailed for drug trafficking while describing them as “victims of politics”.

Nyan Lin, another activist, from the 88 Generation group, confirmed that at least 30 political prisoners were released.

Based from his counting, he included 17 Muslims arrested and charged under the emergency act after religious clashes in the central town of Kyaukse in 2003.

A Myanmar government official said that total of 93 inmates were pardoned but did not identify them. Out of the pardoned inmates, three were foreigners.

He said, “This release aims to allow them to participate in building the country and is also based on humanitarian grounds.”

According to State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell, the United States welcomed the latest release but called for the unconditional freedom of all political prisoners.

Since President Thein Sein took power in March 2011 Myanmar has freed hundreds of political detainees although they have been long denying their existence. The government publicized a reassessment of all politically allied cases in November last year.

Myanmar’s former junta was accused by rights groups of wrongfully imprisoning about 2,000 political opponents, dissidents and journalists.

http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-newspaper-daily-english-online/business/24-Mar-2013/commodities-rocked-by-cyprus-crisis

LONDON  - Many global commodity markets fell this week as traders worried that the Cyprus situation would reignite the eurozone’s sovereign debt crisis and dent global demand for raw materials. However, precious metal gold won ground as many investors sought a safe place to park their cash.

“Gold prices have firmed as events in Cyprus have unfolded this week, but the base metals complex and oil prices have come under pressure,” said Barclays analyst Suki Cooper.

“A recovery in investor risk appetite is passing commodities markets by. The growth outlook is still not strong enough to support the kind of broad-based pick-up already seen in many other asset classes.”
Cyprus is locked in emergency talks with a troika of lenders to save the eurozone member’s banking system and economy in general from ruin, and the option of a tax on bank deposits back on the table.
The European Union has given Nicosia until Monday to raise 5.8 billion euros ($7.47 billion) to unlock loans worth 10 billion euros or face being choked from European Central Bank emergency funding in a move that would bankrupt the island.

OIL: World crude prices sank as fears intensified over Cyprus. The market also fell as traders banked profits despite strong manufacturing data in China, which is the world’s biggest consumer of energy.
The European Central Bank warned on Thursday it was ready to pull the plug on emergency funding for Cyprus banks as the island’s politicians scrambled to raise billions of euros to head off financial meltdown.

In another blow to sentiment, the eurozone Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), published by London-based Markit, showed that the German economy was starting to be affected by the problems in the rest of Europe and that the French slowdown was accelerating.
Overall the eurozone PMI, a leading indicator of growth, fell to four-month low of 46.5 points in March against 47.9 in February. “Concerns about demand for oil intensified following the release of disappointing eurozone PMI readings and after the ECB issued an ultimatum to Cyprus to come up with a bailout plan by Monday or else it would suspend its provision of emergency liquidity,” said GFT analyst Fawad Razaqzada.

Prices had rallied in New York on Wednesday after the US Department of Energy reported an unexpected decline of 1.3 million barrels in oil stocks in the week ending March 15.
That confounded market expectations for a large gain of 1.7 million barrels, suggesting stronger-than-expected demand in the United States, which is the world’s top crude consumer.
Crude futures were also strengthened by the Federal Reserve’s widely expected move to maintain its stimulus programme on Wednesday.
